[dry roasted seaweed]Thousands of years ago, seaweed appeared in the diet of Japanese people. People here call them "superfoods" because of their rich taste, rich nutrients, low calories, and high fiber.
According to Just One Cookbook (a Japanese cooking knowledge-sharing website), the vast ocean surrounding Japan has more than 10,000 species of algae, of which about 20 are commonly used in food. Miso soup, dashi juice, mixed salad, rolled sushi, fried tempura, sunomono pickled vegetables ... are famous delicacies using seaweed. Prostate cancer
A team of 10 New Zealand and Chinese scientists has published a new study on fucoidan in the US National Library. The researchers found that the Mekabu Fucoidan in Wakame brown seaweed (scientific name Undaria pinnatifida) has the ability to support prostate cancer prevention.
This effect is due to Mekabu Fucoidan which has a mechanism to support the inhibition of tumor growth (Angiogenesis), promote the death process of cancer cells (Apoptosis). The study opens the door for a new approach, using fucoidan as a complementary therapy in combination with other therapeutic agents, to bring new hope to prostate cancer patients.
Breast cancer
In 2016, a study published in the Journal of Cancer showed that fucoidan in brown seaweed contributed to inhibiting tumor growth by modulating non-coding RNA molecules in the body. The miR-29 RNA group inhibits tumor growth, while the miR-17/92 group promotes faster tumor metastasis. Fucoidan interferes with this process, helping to increase miR-29 and reduce miR-17/92, thereby reversing the growth of breast cancer cells.
Ovarian and cervical cancer
Scientists from the University of Texas (Houston, USA) also found that Fucoidan extract in Wakame seaweed has the potential to contribute to inhibiting ovarian and cervical tumors. This brown seaweed is native to Japan but was first found off the east coast of the United States in 1988.
Research shows that fucoidan may contribute to reducing the growth of ovarian and cervical tumors. The scientists also found that taking Fucoidan in combination with existing breast cancer drugs could contribute to an increase in breast cancer suppression effectiveness by up to 26%.
Stomach cancer
Colorectal cancer
According to Science Direct (UK news site), the Fucus Fucoidan found in brown algae Bladder Wrack (scientific name Fucus Vesiculosus) may contribute to slowing the growth of colorectal tumors and breast cancer. A team of five Russian scientists used a combination of radiation therapy and supplement with extract of Fucus Fucoidan. The results showed that Fucoidan contributes to the enhancement of malignant tumor cell inhibitory effect of X-ray radiation, by activating apoptosis, helping to prevent the occurrence of anti-protein. Apoptotic process again.
